Discover how this revolutionary approach allows you to wander farther, move faster, and forge a deeper connection with the natural world. So grab your featherweight pack, tighten your laces, and let's embark on a journey where every ounce counts, and the freedom of the trail knows no bounds.
When ultralight traveling, the first 3 things you want to consider when cutting weight (these things are often referred to as “the big 3”) are your shelter, sleep system, and backpack.
Picking your bag:
Although there is no specific definition, if your base weight is less than 10 pounds, you are often regarded as an ultralight backpacker. The "consumables" (food, water, and fuel), which fluctuate with trips and get lighter as you eat, drink, and cook, are subtracted from the overall weight of your filled pack to determine your base weight. Your clothing, water filter, stove, tent, and sleeping bag won't alter significantly from trip to trip. If your base weight is under 20 pounds and under 5 pounds, respectively, you are typically referred to as a superlight backpacker. A typical backpacker weighs less than 30 pounds at his or her base.
Picking your shelter:
You should typically choose a shelter that weighs less than two pounds if you're traveling alone. Aim for a weight of less than three pounds for a two-person shelter. Each of the shelter options favored by minimalist travelers has advantages and disadvantages, so the choice will ultimately come down to personal preferences, what works for you, and how much you can spend. Do you prefer a tent or a different option like a hammock, bivy, or tarp? Who will be living at the shelter with whom? Are you in need of bug defense? Do you want a setup that is enclosed? Do you prefer to sleep off the ground or not?
Picking your sleep system:
Choosing the right ultralight sleep system is essential for a restful night's sleep during your lightweight adventures. Prioritize a compact, lightweight sleeping bag or quilt matched to the expected temperatures, and complement it with a packable sleeping pad for insulation and comfort. Hammock camping can be an option for weight-conscious hikers, provided you choose a sturdy and lightweight hammock system. A well-chosen ultralight sleep system reduces backpack weight, enhancing the overall enjoyment of your outdoor experience. For hammocks, we recommend Nomads Roam’s Quick hammock with mosquito netting.
Your cooking system:
Instead of preparing a meal from scratch when camping, you can decide to forego cooking any meals and just boil water to add to dry food. Because of this, less food and fuel has to be carried.
If soak cooking isn't really your cup of tea, look for compact and efficient cooking stoves, like ultralight canister stoves or alcohol stoves, and lightweight cookware. Consider using a minimalist pot, cup, and spork to save space and weight.
So, you know how to cook, pick a bag, sleep system and shelter. Here are some final things to remember when ultralight camping.
